Definition of serial, modular and systemic construction methods (SMSB)
Serial, modular and systemic construction methods (SMS construction methods) are, in principle, those in which large-scale wall, ceiling, floor, roof and façade elements, or space-forming modules and room units, are prefabricated in a factory and then assembled or installed on site. Prefabrication is characterised by standardised, (partially) automated and/or serial (repeatable) production steps that are subject to quality control. It generally takes place across different trades. These construction methods are based on digitised and integrated planning and manufacturing processes. They offer the potential to improve efficiency, quality, sustainability and cost-effectiveness in new builds as well as in the extension and refurbishment of existing buildings, whilst taking into account the surrounding context and environmental conditions.

Future-oriented construction
Future-oriented construction combines environmental, economic and social sustainability with technological innovation. In the context of serial, modular and systemic construction, this means utilising digitalisation, the circular economy and industrial processes in such a way as to create durable, adaptable and socially responsible buildings.
Current research is investigating how these principles can be effectively implemented under different global conditions.

This article contextualises serial, modular and systemic construction methods within the framework of current challenges facing housing construction and examines key framework conditions, potential and obstacles. In particular, it discusses the role of the round table and the contribution these construction methods make to speeding up the building process and ensuring quality.
