Serial construction – efficiency through repeatability and standardisation

Serial construction is based on the repeated use of standardised construction processes and building elements, which enable a high degree of planning certainty, cost-efficiency and reduced construction times. By prefabricating entire building components, production is decoupled from the actual construction process, thereby applying industrial manufacturing principles to the construction process.
From a scientific perspective, serial construction lies at the intersection of standardisation and individualisation: the aim is not uniformity, but the optimisation of construction processes whilst taking into account design, functional and contextual requirements. Research is currently focusing in particular on questions regarding the adaptability of serial systems and their contribution to sustainable building practices. The advantages of digitalisation in the prefabrication and construction of serial buildings are also a field of research that is attracting growing attention.
