Integrated townships and extreme density - are Indian cities the perfect 15-minute cities (15MC)?

The topics of integrated neighbourhood development and mixed use are becoming increasingly important in the property sector. Mixed-use buildings and neighbourhoods are increasingly becoming the focus of stakeholders, particularly in the wake of the intense debate surrounding the 15-minute city. Cities are increasingly focussing on mixed-use developments in order to improve local amenities and quality of life in urban areas. Indian cities have a long tradition of mixed-use neighbourhoods. The seemingly chaotic Indian city centres are characterised by extreme accessibility. New-build neighbourhoods in India are also very often constructed as "integrated townships", i.e. as functionally integrated (mixed-use) neighbourhoods. In India, which is now the largest country in the world in terms of population, there is also very dynamic growth in the property markets and a high level of construction activity, which makes the country's major cities even more interesting for architects.

As part of the IP3 seminar in winter semester 2023/24, we therefore took an in-depth look at the Indian real estate markets and in particular examined integrated neighbourhood development, mixed use and the idea of the 15-minute city in the Indian metropolises of Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. We asked ourselves whether we can learn from Indian cities or whether it is possible to transfer findings from European developments to Indian cities. As part of the excursion to India accompanying the seminar, a summer school was organised in Mumbai. The discussions and the joint impromptu with students from the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA) were certainly one of the professional highlights of the excursion.
